Inmate charged with sexual assault

An Iowa State Penitentiary inmate, who is serving time on a sexual crime, is now facing serious allegations he raped another inmate.

The Attorney General's Office has recently filed two counts of third-degree sexual abuse against Bobby Beckman, 28. If convicted on both counts, Beckman faces an additional 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors allege Beckman sexually abused a male inmate in January "by force and against his will, and/or against a person suffering from a mental defect or incapacity which precluded giving consent."

No additional comment was provided. Beckman is serving a total of 20 years for Clay County convictions for third-degree sexual abuse, fleeing state to avid prosecution and a Lee County conviction for interference with a correctional officer.

A judge has appointed the public defender's office to represent Beckman in the case. He will be arraigned on the charges April 30.
