Mount Pleasant prison chief quits

James Carter, who became superintendent of the Mount Pleasant state prison and mental health institute last year, has abruptly resigned, state officials confirmed today.

Iowa prison spokesman Fred Scaletta said Carter had not been fired. He declined to elaborate further, only saying that Carter had resigned his post last week. Carter could not be reached for comment.

Carter became superintendent of the Mount Pleasant complex on Aug. 11, 2006. He had left Mississippi to come to Iowa in October 2005, first serving as administrator of the Clinical Care Unit for mentally ill inmates at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison.

Mount Pleasant's deputy superintendent, Charles Higgins, has been appointed interim superintendent, Scaletta said. The search for a new superintendent will begin in the near future, he added.
